A port-a-potty tanker tipped over New Year’s Eve morning. It's contents spilled onto an onramp in south Wichita. The impact punctured the truck's tank turning the snow from white to blue.
“None of it is hazardous. It's just a combination of water and sanitizer used in portable septic tanks,” said Kansas Highway Patrol trooper Stivers.
Crews were called to the scene just before 9:00 Monday morning. Troopers shut down the ramp from I-135 to I-235 as they cleaned up. KHP says the driver took the curve too fast. While the driver is okay, it's a reminder to drivers to use caution even when roads appear to look clear.
“There can be spots where you don't see the ice that is there so we would just urge people to be careful,” said Wichita Public Works director Alan King.
Wichita Public Works crews got a head start on the New Year's Eve snow.
“We got out ahead of this storm yesterday and part of last week and applied some salt on some of the elevated surfaces. That helps the surfaces from freezing, helps melt the precipitation that comes down,” said King.
So when people woke up this morning, they were pleasantly surprised.
“I looked out the window and saw all this snow but fortunately the streets were clear. All my concerns went out with the window,” said driver Anthony Perkins Jr..
With New Year's Eve celebrations mixed in with possible ice, taking risk is the last thing one mom is doing. She's staying in this New Year’s Eve.
“As far as getting out with this weather, and with the possible icy roads later on We'll probably have a quiet new year's eve at home,” said driver Leslie Clawson.
Public Works says to pay attention to residential roads because they're not high priority routes for plows. If you're going out, Wichita police are on high alert.
Although there are no set DUI checkpoints police are watching for signs of bad driving.
