Commissioners say the reduction was made possible because of revenue generated by The Kansas Star Casino.
"The taxes on a $100,000 home will drop by about $200 a year," said Commission Chairman Cliff Bales.
Sumner County receives 1% of gaming revenue from the casino near Mulvane. Sumner's rake for is just over $1 million.
Bales said the commission was committed to making good on its promise to return casino money to the taxpayers in the form of a mill reduction.
"That's is absolutely huge. That will be a big boost to this whole county," said Wellington resident Linda Soria. She and her husband, Joe, pay nearly $3700 in annual property taxes on their home.
The Sorias are looking forward to some tax relief and hope to use the extra money to pay for home repairs they've had to put on hold.
"Everybody has tightened up," said Joe Soria. "It's going to be good for this town." said Joe Soria.
The Sorias are also hopeful a lower property tax rate will attract more businesses to Wellington and encourage more people to stay.
