Officials in Kansas City suburb are considering a ban on hand-held cellphones while driving.

The proposed ordinance would allow drivers in the town of Mission to talk on hands-free cellphones.  But police would be able to pull over drivers who are hold their phones within 8 inches of their heads.

The proposal is currently making its way through the Mission City Council's finance & administration committee.  It will likely not come up for public discussion until November.

Laura McConwell, the mayor of Mission, says the council recognizes the safety issues involved.  But she adds the ordinance may require workshops, public hearings, and other activities aimed at educating the public.

Currently, Manhattan is the only Kansas city to ban cellphones for drivers.
