A senior was crowned Clearwater's Homecoming Queen Friday, but she's not your typical winner.
Lelia Anderson was originally crowned queen in 1942 in the midst of World War II. The depression was so bad, Clearwater High School almost canceled its homecoming festivities.
But back then, a group of cheerleaders saved the day and money by making Anderson's crown out of cardboard and adorning it with hard candy. "It had places that had wrappers of sparkly candy poked in each one and it had a V, cut into the cardboard and I kept it for a long time," Anderson said.
Now seven decades later, the 2012 Clearwater High School homecoming queen candidates crowned Anderson with a real crown, one made with actual jewels. The whole ceremony came as surprise to the Anderson who is now in her 80's.
