A Harvey County infant lost her mother this week in a car accident. The girl's father survived, but is still healing after suffering two broken femurs. As he works to recover, he faces raising a nine-month-daughter on his own. That's why friends and family in the town of Sedgwick are organizing a benefit to help them move forward.
"This is where it all started, our friendship back in kindergarten. We've all been together growing up in a small town, you're classmates for life," said Kirsten Liby. Liby is talking about her friend, new wife and mom 19-year-old Taylor Sowell. "I think everybody is pretty devastated with it. Taylor was an amazing friend and wife and mother. She was always happy and bubbly," she said.
Late Saturday night, the car Taylor was in hit a train. Taylor died in the accident. Her 17-year-old brother suffered a concussion and her husband was badly injured. He's now in rehabilitation and once he's done he'll raise their daughter. "He got to see her for the first time and she is definitely going to be his medicine. You saw the life come back into him when he saw her," Dylan's mother said.
Friends and family are trying to help as well. The community of Sedgwick is hosting a fundraiser this weekend. "It's going to be for whatever Dylan and the baby see fit. If he needs to use it for medical bills, if he just needs it to keep him and Lincoln on their feet, he can do it for that. It's whatever he sees fit with it," Liby said.
The fundraiser is Sunday October 14. There will be a benefit dinner and auction. Friends are also asking for donations like diapers, formula and clothes. The benefit starts at five o'clock at the Sedgwick Elementary School. At least 40 items are up for auction.
