Pieces of history fell to the ground in Abilene as demolition crews tore through what was left of the Kirby House Restaurant.The historic home and restaurant burned down February 20th.
They worked to make the are safe for investigators, who were looking for clues to tell them how the fire started. Investigators believe the origin was in the basement. Since there is so much damage, heavy equipment is removing unstable pieces of the building to let investigators get a better look inside.
Community members drove by all day, looking and taking pictures of the what was left of the Kirby House.
"We heard that today was going to be the day they could possibly be tearing it down, and we just wanted to see it one last time," resident Barbara Brittan said.
The home built in 1885 was a historical piece of Abilene. It started as a home and over the years was used as a club, apartments and then a restaurant.
"It was sad to see this really, because I hate to see history disappear like that." Lois Shepherd of Abilene said.
It's not just history the people of Abilene are losing, it's also a restaurant full of memories.
"My husband and I had dinner here before he passed away, always on a regular basis" Abilene's Rosie Anderson said. "It's just really sad to me to see that."
