Wichita records its second largest snow fall on record. The National Weather Service says 14.2 inches fell at Wichita's Mid-Continent Airport. That's the second largest snowfall for an individual storm.
Communities like Hays received 17 inches of snow and Salina received 11.7 inches as of 5:00 Thursday night.
Storm Team 12 Meteorologist Ross Janssen says the snow does have a decent amount of water content in it. He filled a hotel ice bucket to the brim with snow. When it melted, he had about 10 ounces of water.
Janssen says this snow will put a little bit of a dent in the drought. He says since Kansas is so far behind on moisture, it won't solve the drought but it will help.
You may have also heard thunder this morning. The Wichita area experienced thundersnow. Storm Team 12 Meteorologist Mark Larson says thundersnow only happens in one out of 140 snow storms across the plains.
Larson says when thundersnow happens, it produces a huge amount of snow in a short period of time. He says about three inches fell between two and four Thursday morning.
