The Trust Women Foundation has confirmed it has purchased and plans to offer abortion services in Dr. George Tiller’s former clinic.
Eyewitness News also confirmed the purchase through the Kansas Secretary of State's Office.
“Trust Women is pleased to confirm the recent purchase of Dr. Tiller's former office building. This represents one step closer to the goal of providing full-spectrum health services for area women, including abortion services,” says Trust Women Executive Director Julie Burkhart in a written statement.
The foundation is not saying how soon the clinic will open or how many doctors will offer services.
“While this is a big step, we still have a long way to go. We will continue our work to improve access and reduce the stigma associated with abortion,” says Burkhart.
Anti-abortion activists say they are getting ready.
“We're looking at getting the people that previously volunteered at the gate. Some of them don't live in Kansas anymore,” says Mark Gietzen with The Kansas Coalition for Life.
He says his group wants to recruit at least 600 people to stand at the gate of the clinic and offer women alternatives to abortion.
“It's hard to get someone to come out here it takes a certain mind set,” adds Gietzen who says volunteers often put in 12 to 16 hour days at the clinic.
