Hurricane Sandy left thousands without homes. Many have turned to family for help, even if that means living more than a thousand miles from home.
It's how one family ended up making Wichita home.
“You can't believe your eyes,” says Lana Major who lives in Long Beach Island, New Jersey.
“I don't know what to expect it's going to take years to get things back to norm.”
Major’s home wasn't badly damaged, but gas to the island has been shut off, and could stay off for at least another month.
“Yes...it could be. I don't know how long, but knowing how our community pulls together I’m thinking sooner than later,” says Major.
For now, Lana and her family call Wichita home.
“The moment we heard about Sandy we tried to get them to come to Kansas,” says Major’s sister Erika Edwards.
You won't hear complaints from either sister.
“Of course my doors are open for them,” says Edwards.
“I feel so fortunate compared to everyone else and the damage they've had. I’m fortunate mine is so minimal compared to others,” says Major.
Fortunate, Major says, to have family in Kansas to give them a place to call home.
