(WICHITA, Kan.)—
A northeast Wichita neighborhood association sent a warning to homeowners. Thieves may be looking for newspapers in driveways on late Sunday mornings.
“I had never heard that angle before. It makes sense they always tell you when you’re out of town to have someone pick up your paper,” says Kim Potochnik with the Northeast K-96 Neighborhood Association.
“It's good to understand what the police know. It's why the association is so helpful.”
The latest information she's trying to get out there is an attempted break in at a neighbor's home.
The thieves hit on a late Sunday morning, possibly looking for newspapers still in the drive-way. Police told the association they are seeing other cases.
“It's a primetime to think that person has gone to church,” says Potochnik.
The victim in the latest case was getting in the shower and didn’t answer a knock on the door. It wasn’t until the burglars tried throwing a brick through her window that she came to the door and scared them off. She told Eyewitness News that her paper was still in the drive.
It’s something we've reported several times, not only in the city, but also in rural areas.
Thieves come to the door, knock, and if no one answers they assume no one is home.
Police say that if you hear a knock at the door you don't have to answer, but you at least have to let them know that someone is inside.
