Police officers say they saw Chris Erwin driving erratically around 13th and Hillside last Friday. They say he hit two cars and continued on to Woodlawn where he crashed into a third.
Tuesday, we sat down with Erwin who says he doesn't remember anything from that day and says his diabetes is to blame."You can do everything right, everything the doctors tell you, one little minor glitch and be two or three units off on your insulin any little thing could send you in a spiral," explains Erwin.
He says he's dealt with type 1 diabetes for 15 years, but he's never had to deal with something like what happened last Friday.
"Imagine waking up the next day to 'hey, what's up? You just hurt four people. You sent four people to the hospital." How would you feel? You would be devastated."
Police say the incident is still under investigation. Officers are waiting on medical records before they release an official cause.
But Erwin say the crashes have rattled him enough that he's not sure he wants to drive anymore - renewing a personal effort to bring better public transit to Wichita.
"Most diabetics control themselves just fine and are not a danger. But for me personally, because of that incident, I'm at a point now where I don't want to drive anymore. So, it's one of those things right now where I hope the city continues to develop their plan for this new transit system and they don't fall short of implementing a great program."
