The fiance of the man who ran into a sandpit filled with water said she doesn't know if her fiance is dead or alive. Wichita police and firefighters stopped searching for the 27-year-old Friday afternoon after not finding any sign of the man.
Wichita police said they believe the 27-year-old drowned after running away from officers. They tried to pull him over early Friday morning but he took off.
LaShonte Walker, fiance, was in the car when the chase with police started. She said he had just gotten out of jail Thursday and didn't have a license. They were in the car with another man who she said threatened her fiance if he didn't keep driving.
She said they were going up to 90 mph and then they crashed through a fence at 35th and Gold, which is near I-235. She said she yelled at him to stop when she saw the water. Walker said her fiance got out of the car and headed towards the water.
"He said help, help and they never found him," she said.
Walker and the other passenger were taken in for questioning by Wichita Police.
Wichita search crews spent hours searching the sandpit pond by boat and with the help of divers. Battalion Child John Turner says the water was difficult to search because it had a lot of debris and metal that divers could get entangled in.
"We did hit on some debris with our sonar that we went down and investigated, but unfortunately we couldn't find anybody," Turner said.
