Thieves are caught in the act trying to take copper from a southwest Wichita business Sunday morning.
Police were called to Cook's Heating and Air in the 2200 block of South West Street around 4:45 in the morning Sunday after a person saw a burglary in progress via a surveillance camera.
When officers arrived they saw a truck leaving the area. The truck was inside a fenced in area, the fence had been cut. Individuals in the truck were hooking a trailer up to it and loading copper and other items from the business.
Officers attempted to stop the vehicle. The individuals inside ended up running on foot into a drainage tunnel that was partially covered with mud and water. Officers didn't chase them into the water because of the cold weather. They did surround the area and brought in a K-9 unit.
The thieves ended up eventually coming out and gave up on their own. They were booked on burglary theft and criminal damage to property.
