Bombardier Learjet is going ahead with the expansion of its Wichita facility, even as it halts production on one of its business jet lines.
The company will stop production of the Learjet 60 XR midsize business jet later this year. The company tells Eyewitness News, that production can resume if orders pick up. Work on existing orders will continue.
Bombardier's facility near Mid-Continent Airport is undergoing a $52 million dollar expansion. The work will make room for the new Learjet 85 and create more than 400 jobs.
Bombardier says approx. 275 current workers will be impacted by the decision to halt work on the Learjet 60 X. The company says it is considering several options for those employees.
The Learjet 60 can carry eight-passengers and has a range of 2,407 nautical miles.
Production of the Learjet 70, 75 and the new 85 will not be impacted by the changes. The Learjet 85 is set to enter service next year.
