A Hutchinson man remains hospitalized after his garage exploded late last night. Rod Zook of KWBW-AM radio tells Eyewitness News officials believe there was some gas buildup in the detached garage which somehow ignited.

It happened at 16th and Washington, but the sound of the blast was heard up to a mile away.

The blast was powerful enough to throw the victim from the garage.  He was on fire when his wife found him.  She was able to put the fire out.

The victim was rushed to the burn unit at Via Christi in Wichita in critical condition.

The garage is a total loss and there is damage to both the man's home and a neighboring home.

No one else was hurt. The victim's name has not been released.
