A multimillion dollar aquarium has been added to a new development plan for Bel Aire's Caban district.
The $50 million project will feature a 300-gallon aquarium, five smaller exhibits and multiple other displays for interactive and educational purposes.
The Caban Marketplace Star Bond district is expected to be built next to city hall. The developer has also announced plans to build a retail center, restaurants, training academy, water park and hotel.
The marketplace attractions are different than a STAR bond project planned at K-96 and Greenwich. That project includes an indoor sports facility, water park and hotel.
STAR bonds allow Kansas municipalities the opportunity to issue bonds to finance the development of major commercial, entertainment and tourism areas and use the sales tax revenue generated by the development to pay off the bonds. A STAR bond project must be approved by the state.
