A 12-year-old Kansas boy is hoping to give back to his community by getting kicked out of his bedroom.
Colby Weishaar, Nortonville, is collecting canned food items for "Operation: Kick me out of my bedroom." It started by asking local businesses to donate non-perishable food items that he stored in his room. He hoped to collect 50 cans, but has received 1,600.
He said his 4-H leader's death inspired the project.
"They're doing a reward for the biggest community service project," Weishaar said. "She was my mom's best friend and she was really close to my mom. So I'm doing this to try to win the plaque that has her name on it."
The canned items are piled so high, that he can't even walk through his room. He hopes to donate more than 2,000 cans to local food banks this summer.
"It feels really great to give to others," Weishaar said.
