A man accused of firing shots at Wichita Police officers has been charged with attempted murder.

Prosecutors charged Aaron Belcher with first-degree attempted murder, aggravated assault, burglary, possession of stolen property, running from officers and criminal possession of a firearm.

The charges stem from an incident January 13 where officers spotted a stolen car near Kinkaid and Broadway. The driver sped off after officers tried to stop the vehicle.

The chase reached speeds up to 100 mph in a residential area. Police said Belcher ditched the car, then tried to hide in a shed in the 2500 block of W. Dallas.

Authorities said Belcher pulled out a gun, firing a shot, when officers tried to approach the shed. That officer returned fire, striking the suspect three times. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

His preliminary hearing is set for Feb. 27.
