Pratt High School is home to the best mascot in Kansas, according to a USA Today High School Sports online poll.
The Greenback is now competing against eight other mascots in the region, in a contest to be named the best high school mascot in the country.
The USA Today staff selected 255 mascots in the 50 states plus the District of Columbia, then had readers vote on the best mascot in each state. The Greenback was chosen to compete against the Hesston Swathers, the Fowler Goldbugs, the St. John's Military Mule Skinners and the Palco Roosters in Kansas. The state round concluded Tuesday, and Pratt will move on to represent the state of Kansas after collecting more than 49 percent of the total votes.
The frog mascot is going up against others from Region 5, which includes Montana, Colorado, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, Wyoming, and New Mexico.
Other mascots in the Region 5 ballots are:
Chinook Sugarbeeters, Chinook , MT
Clear Creek Golddiggers, Evergreen, CO
Dusters, Holdrege, NE
Wardogs, Miami, OK
Swifts, Nazareth, TX
Dogies, New Castle, WY
Victory Christian Centurions, Albuquerque, NM
The contest lasts through March 14. The six regional winners will compete in the final from March 15-25. The national winner will receive $2,000 for its athletic department. Other regional winners will receive between $100 and $1,000.
