It's known as one of the worst interchanges in Wichita and in the future could get a complete overhaul.

The process is underway to reconstruct the interchange of I-235 and Kellogg.

The public was invited to a meeting Wednesday night. Design concepts were unveiled on how to deal with traffic congestion, safety issues and improving overall traffic operations in the area.

"I don't think they have a choice if the the west side if going to grow and traffic is going to move," says resident Myron Ewi who drives the interchange twice a day.

The project will be divided into four phases.  The first phase would build an elevated flyover ramp connecting northbound I-235 to westbound Kellogg.  It would also provide a two lane flyover ramp for southbound I-235 to eastbound Kellogg.

Phase two would provide flyover ramps connecting eastbound Kellogg to northbound I-235 and westbound Kellogg to southbound I-235.

Phase three would reconstruct Kellogg from west of Hoover Road to the Southwest Boulevard/K-42 interchange.  Bridges over the Big Ditch would be replaced.

Phase four would reconstruct I-235 from Maple through Central. At Central all four ramps would be replaced.

The state's "T-WORKS" program has funded the first phase at $116 million and could begin in 2017.  The first phase would be complete sometime in 2020.

The remaining phases are not funded and estimated to cost an additional $239 million.
