Wichita based Big Dog Motorcycles was seized by Intrust Bank on Wednesday, voiding all warranties and stopping business of any kind. Tough news for the owners of the bikes.
For nine years, one of those Big Dog bikes has been Scott Hildreth's dream bike.
"When they announced they were going to build the chopper I knew at that moment that I had to have one."
He picked out the paint, the style and nearly everything on the ride. And what made it even sweeter, is the bike was made right here in Wichita.
"There was a certain level of comfort in knowing that, in the event of the motorcycle breaking down, that I would have someone I could take it to and get all but immediate service."
So as news spread about Big Dog closing its doors, so did worry about whether he'll still be able to get his motorcycle worked on. But there could be an answer for that.
You can see another name right on the Big Dog sign, BDM Performance Parts. It's the name of the new company that's been formed, and bought the inventory that Big Dog Motorcycles had.
The president of the company tells Eyewitness News it will continue to make parts to service the 25,000 Big Dog motorcycles out there.
But for owners like Hildreth, that doesn't make everything right again. "Obtaining the parts, that's a plus, but you still need someone to do the work and Big Dog was that company."
And when asked if Big Dog will ever make motorcycles in Wichita again, the president of BDM said the future is anyone's guess.
