During a special meeting Tuesday, the Garden City Commission appoints someone to fill a vacant commission seat.

Commissioners voted unanimously to appoint retired fire marshal Melvin Dale to fill the vacancy left by John Doll. He resigned earlier this month to begin his new job in the state legislature.

Seven people submitted letters of interest to temporarily fill the opening. Dale says he is ready to step in and give back to his community.

"Every Friday they send out the agenda for the next commission meeting and I'm going to go over that, and study that, and hopefully I can contribute to the dialogue and in the discussions and be part of the team," said Dale.

Dale will fill the vacancy through the April city elections.
