While constantly changing gas prices are nothing new, there is something different about many of the prices at the pump in Wichita.
When you fill up, you usually have three choices: regular, mid-grade and premium gas. Traditionally the prices between the three are separated by 10 cents.
Now many stores in Wichita have as much as 12 cents separating the different grades of gasoline. The changes include Wichita-area Quik Trip stores.
Factfinder 12 called the company to find out why they made the change. Quik Trip spokesperson Mike Thornbrugh says it is because premium fuel is becoming more of a specialty gas.
Thornbrugh says regular unleaded makes up the majority of the gas the company sells, as much as 90%, so that means refiners make less of the high octane blends, which, in turn, increases their cost.
He says Wichita and Tulsa are some of the few places that have been still seen the 10 cent price spread between fuel grades.
