A packed courtroom watches as a Salina man made his first court appearance on charges he killed a 14-month-old boy.
Antonio Brown is charged with first-degree murder and child abuse in the death of 14-month-old Clayden Urbanek. Investigators say the 27-year-old Brown abused the child over an eight day span.
Urbanek died Tuesday after having difficulty breathing while police say Brown was watching him. Investigators say Brown called the child's mother, his girlfriend, who came home and called 911.
Salina police say the child had bruises all over his body, a broken rib and internal bleeding.
The Urbanek family talked with Eyewitness News on Thursday. Jack Urbanek, the great uncle of Clayden Urbanek told us how the family is handling everything.
"We have a lot of broken hearts right now".
Eyewitness News also spoke with a Salina based child advocacy group who called the entire case "preventable".
A judge set Antonino Brown's bond at $1 million. Brown is expected back in court Friday morning with an appointed attorney.Copyright © 2013, KWCH-TV
