Police say the teen mother of a baby found in a dumpster said the child was stillborn.
During a briefing Tuesday, Wichita police say the 17-year-old gave birth to the child last week. She told police the child was stillborn, and she disposed of it in the trash.
Police say another member of the girl's family took the trash to a shopping center near Kellogg and Rock Road, and disposed of the trash in a dumpster. Investigators say the family member did not know the child was in the trash.
The girl did not tell her parents about the child. They say she later became sick and went to the hospital, where she told doctors about the baby. Investigators say the mother is now out of the hospital.
Police say they are still investigating and waiting for more details on the case, including confirming whether or not the child was stillborn. Even if evidence shows the child was stillborn, police say the mother could still face charges.
Police want other expecting mothers to know they have options, including the Safe Haven law which allows you to drop off a baby up to 45 days old at any hospital, police department, or fire station, no questions asked.
