Governor Sam Brownback signs the Kansas Secure and Fair Elections Act into law on Monday.

The law is aimed at cracking down on voter fraud. The main provisions of the SAFE Act are that newly-registered Kansas voters must prove U.S. citizenship when registering to vote beginning January 1, 2013.

Voters must also show a photo ID when casting a vote in person and they must have their signature verified and provide a full Kansas driver's license or non-driver ID number when voting by mail.

The bill was pushed hard by Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach. Kobach says that "With Governor Brownback's signature, Kansas has now accomplished something truly extraordinary."
