On the November ballot Valley Center residents will be asked to consider a 1% sales tax increase. Supporters hope it will pass so the community will have a recreation center closer than Wichita, but opponents feel, it's not the time.
"Drive to Wichita and work out, that's the options they have now," said Valley Center Recreation Commission director Steve Geddes.
Steve Geddes wants residents of valley center to consider a new option. The proposed new recreation center is valued at 6.7 million dollars.
"We think that there's enough things in Valley Center- businesses, enough attractions to keep them here, but if they've got to go seek exercise outside the community they're probably going to shop outside of the community, and we want to keep them here," said Geddes.
The new center comes equipped with an indoor pool, gym, cardio and weight lifting equipment and more. Take a drive through town, and you'll notice lawns dotted with signs saying they won't pay.
"We pay enough tax, prices are going up, I'm retired with a limited income. I'm against any sort of tax increase," said Valley Center resident Larry Ensey.
Valley Center residents would pay 1% percent on anything from groceries to their utilities. It's a small price to pay for some.
"I think it's an excellent opportunity for the community to grow-- to continue to become a still an independent community not just a bedroom community for Wichita. We need these types of facilities that we don't have," said Valley Center resident Brian Jansen.
The proposal for the new rec center will be on the November ballot.
If passed, the tax would fund 2/3 of the new facility over a 20 year period. The sales tax there currently is 7.3%.
