Vandals, angry about the no biking ordinance in College Hill Park are defacing city property.
The Wichita Parks & Recreation Department put up new signs alerting people about the ban. Workers have already had to replace each sign twice.
"Some of them may be doing it because they don't like the signs, they don't like the fact that we have an ordinance that says no bicycling in parks, some of them just makes for a good target for releasing energies," Parks and Recreation Director Dave Kupper told Eyewitness News.
"Yeah, it was one of these signs here, somebody had taken it and put in a tree," says Glen Fondaw, College Hill resident.
The city has replaced all seven signs in College Hill Park, at least twice. Replacing them can get expensive. The city started using concrete to anchor the signs after they disappeared for a second time.
Police say they've received the reports about the vandalized bike signs in college hill park. An officer bent one back into shape so that the city would not waste money to replace it.
"It's the taxpayers dollars that have to come out here and repair the damage to those signs. We're trying to get a handle on it," says police Sgt. Allen Wolf.
"They don't like to arrest a person for riding a bicycle in the park, that's the furthest thing from their wants. But somebody vandalizing city property? They're gonna do some action against that," says Kupper.
Police say vandalizing city property is a felony and anyone caught, could face time in jail.
