Impact of the 2012 hurricane season
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) counted 19 named storms in 2012's hurricane season, including devastating hurricanes Sandy and Isaac. A NOAA release noted the Atlantic has seen "above normal" hurricane activity since 1995, a trend the organization said is ongoing due to warmer Atlantic Ocean temperatures, an enhanced West African monsoon, and reduced vertical wind shear.
