State lawmakers are debating a bill that could affect public health in Kansas. The University of Kansas Medical Center is asking legislators to consider a measure that would establish a stem cell therapy center.

The bill is sponsored by 22 conservative Republican senators. It would create the Midwest Stem Cell Therapy Center at the medical center in Kansas City, Kan.

Supporters say the center could distribute information to physicians about various treatments, and create a network of peer-reviewed models for doctors to learn and perform clinical research.

Scientists have said that stem cell therapy can lead to medical breakthroughs in finding a cure for multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer's.

The legislation also creates a fund in the state treasury that raises money to fulfill the stem cell center's mission. Bernadette Gray-Little, KU Chancellor, has said that research funding is responsible for creating 22 Kansas companies.

It is not known how many jobs the proposal would create.

Abortion opponents challenge human embryonic stem cell research because it involves the destruction of embryos.
