ST. MARY'S, Kan. -

An 11-year-old girl avoided a potential abduction in Pottawatomie County.

She reported that she was walking in the city of St. Mary's on Thursday afternoon when a man in a white van followed her down an alley. She said she avoided him by cutting through a yard, but the driver pulled out of the alley and followed her again.

The girl said the van stopped near her, and the driver yelled "hey come here." The girl was able to run to her home.

She describes the van as a white Chevrolet with three windows on each side. She believes the back windows were tinted dark. She said the passenger door of the van was scratched and dented, and the licenses plate is believed to have said Nebraska.

The Pottawatomie County Sherriff's Office said they would like to speak with the driver. He is described as a male in his late twenties with a short brown goatee. He was wearing black sunglasses and a black baseball cap with no logo.

Any information about this incident can be reported to the Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Office at 785-457-3353 or the St. Mary's Police Department at 785-437-2311.
