(EL DORADO, Kan.) -

At the end of one of the worst weeks of his life, Butler County Sheriff Kelly Herzet sat down to talk to our own Roger Cornish about one of his deputies being shot on Monday ... and the suspect being at large until Friday.

Herzet has a young staff, and admitted he was scared for the officer after hearing the call that he'd been shot. Preparing for the worst, he started thinking about what he might have to tell the deputy's wife, children and parents.

The deputy, Jacob Lawrence, was wearing a bulletproof vest and is on his way to a full recovery. The suspect, Jan Kilbourne, was found in Wichita early this morning and is in jail on a $1 million bond.
