The community of Plains, Kansas, is mourning the loss of loved ones.
The Kansas Highway Patrol said an SUV driven by, 33 year-old Patricia Delatorre, attempted to pass two vehicles 3 miles west of K-23 on US-54 Thursday night.
Troopers said Delatorre was westbound on US-54 along with two other vehicles, both in the slow lane. She tried to pass both, when the passing lane ended.
All three vehicles merged back into two lanes, but the SUV then went into a eastbound ditch and overturned.
Delatorre and a passenger, 16 year-old Valerie Y. Portillo also of Plains died in the crash. Delatorre was not buckled up, while three of four passengers were.
Troopers said 12 year-old Natalie L. Portillo and six year-old Jackie C. Delatorre, were in critical and serious condition respectively at Via Christi in Wichita.
A four-year-old boy identified as Ramone S. Hernandez-Delatorre, of Plains, Kan, was taken to Southwest Medical center for treatment of his injuries.
