PARSONS, Kan. -

The Kansas Attorney General's office is asking for more time to file official charges against a man accused of killing a mother and her three children.

David Bennett, 22, appeared via video link in Labette County District Court Monday. He is being held on $5 million bond in connection to the deaths of 29-year-old Cami Umbarger and her three children, ages 9, 6, and 4.

The judge said there was probable cause to hold Bennett on suspicion of murder, but formal charges are not expected to be filed until next week. The Attorney General's office said they will evaluate all evidence before making a decision on what charges to file.

Bennett had asked the judge several questions during his court appearance Monday.

"I understand I got to probably go to trial and so forth," Bennett said. "But I was just curious, is it necessary to basically have to sit here until this whole trial and get this thing figured out."

The judge said Bennett could get out of jail, if he could bond out. His bond is set at $5 million.

Bennett is expected to return to court in Oswego Dec. 10th at 2pm.. He has filed paperwork for a court-appointed attorney.
