SALINA, Kan. -

Bombardier will be expanding its presence at the Salina airport soon. Hangar 959 or "Big Bertha" has been empty for a couple of years.

Hawker Beechcraft was occupying the space until 2012. Hawker Beechcraft left behind hundreds of jobs and millions in annual payroll. The airport will now be leasing the space to Bombardier's Flight Test Center of Wichita.

Tim Rogers is the Executive Director of Salina Airport Authority and says it will allow Bombardier to grow.

"Having facilities available in the state for storage of aircraft and also flight test operations really leads to ongoing jobs and within the manufacturing space at Learjet in Wichita," says Rogers.

Bombardier is already leasing several different buildings at the Salina airport, but leasing space in "Big Bertha" will allow them to consolidate those other buildings. Airport authority says no jobs are expected to come to Salina as of now from the consolidation.

Mike King is the Secretary of the Kansas Department of Transportation and says he is optimistic about taking the first step in this process.

"It's another part of how Salina helps the greater good of Kansas not just the local economy here,"says King.

Bombardier is expected to start its consolidation on October first.
