Careless smoking blamed for S. Wichita apartment fire
Fire officials say an apartment fire that happened last Friday was caused by a discarded cigarette butt.
Wichita Fire Investigator Donny Eckerman says that fire caused $250,000 damage to the building and $150,000 damage to property inside.
12 apartments, which were home to 24 people, were damaged. Those residents are being taken care of by the American Red Cross.
The fire broke out at the Shores Apartment complex, 2700 South Emporia, around 3:45 p.m on Friday.
One firefighter was injured after he touched a live wire and was shocked. He was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for serious injuries.
No one has been let back into the building.
