One in five children in Sedgwick County live in poverty, according to Kids Count, and those with kids have a tough time buying a necessary item. Diapers.
Diapers can be extremely expensive, racking up hundreds of dollars in expense over the time a child needs them. It's the reason Diaper Hero has started diaper drives in Wichita.
"We are raising awareness for diaper need in Wichita," said Diaper Hero representative, Liz Foust. "They are absolutely vital, but they are expensive."
The diaper they collect then go to several local organizations that will then distribute them, like Treehouse, Crisis Pregnancy Center and Union Rescue Mission.
"There's not a safety net in the tradition sense that covers them," said Foust. "We have WIC that would help families with formula needs and food needs, but that doesn't cover diapers."
Diaper Hero will set up at any business or church that wants to hold a diaper drive, and give all resources that might be needed. CLICK HERE if you'd like to learn more about how you can host a diaper drive.
"To be in that position where you don't have that next clean diaper, what do you do? Families will have to make decisions. They will reuse diapers, it it's not completely soiled they might dump out and use it again, or try to dry it out and use it again."
That could lead to diaper rash and other health concerns for the child.
