CLAFLIN, Kan. -

A fire burned down the event center at Camp Aldrich in Barton County Saturday morning.

The Claflin Fire Department says the fire began around 5 a.m. in the kitchen and another large room. The space has been a popular venue for weddings, proms and other events for decades. A wedding was scheduled for today but the party had to move the event to town.

The space is also home to "Camp Hope" an outdoor event for kids with cancer that takes place every Summer.

Crews have spent nearly 12 hours working to put out the flames. The rural location made it difficult to bring in water and some of the heavy equipment got stuck on the sandy roads.

The Fire Chief says the building is a total loss and the fire Marshall is beginning an investigation to find the cause.
