WICHITA, Kan. -

A woman who was the only survivor in a crash that killed three of her friends, and their designated driver, remains hospitalized.

Janell Henderson is in a rehab facility after the southeast Wichita accident over St. Patrick's day weekend. Police believe a medical condition led to the fiery crash, killing Andrew Montgomery, Jessica Metzger, Sara Smith and Victoria Dougherty.

Julie Johnson, Henderson's friend, said Janell was thrown from the vehicle.

"Janell went through the sun roof and that is probably what saved her life," Johnson said. "She was trying to help steer the car with another person inside."

Henderson was taken to a Wichita hospital in critical condition. She has since been transferred to a rehab facility where she continues her road to recovery.

Kelli Garst said Henderson is improving every day.

"Both of her legs from the waist down were completely shattered," Garst said. "The orthopedic surgeon who did that said we put as many pins, needles, plates as her little legs could hold."

The biggest concern for doctor's now is Henderson's head injury, and how that may impact the length of her recovery. While the injuries heal, her friends are doing what they can to help.

"Janell had no insurance, she had just started a new job," Johnson said.

Friends organized a barbeque fundraiser Sunday to help offset medical costs. Donations can also be made here.

"We are going to keep doing other events, as many as we can for as long as we can because she has a long road ahead of her," Johnson said.
