The Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office is looking for an inmate who was mistakenly released from jail Tuesday afternoon.
Chad Alan Engel was booked on traffic charges and a McPherson County Warrant on July 2.
He was released on the traffic charges and was being held in the booking area to be transferred to McPherson County Sheriff's Deputies.
A detention corporal saw Engel dressed in street clothes and thought he was being released from custody. That corporal escorted him out the front door of the facility.
"He knew he was not to be released from jail," said Sedgwick County Sheriff's Lieutenant Dave Mattingly. "Sounds like it was just a simple mistake, obviously with serious consequences."
Booking staff noticed the mistake right away and contacted law enforcement.
Several agencies assisted in looking for Engel but he was not located.
Engel has an active McPherson County warrant and additional charges will be sought from Sedgwick County.
"Rarely does this happen, obviously we are looking into exactly how it happened so we can correct any procedures that are in place," Mattingly said.
Anyone with information on Engel’s whereabouts should call Sheriff Warrants at 660-3960 or call 9-1-1.
The Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office says In 2013, 26,514 persons were booked into the Sedgwick County Jail. In the same time 26,339 persons were released from jail. This year there have been 11,900 persons booked and 11,778 persons released from jail.
