WICHITA, Kan. -

A Kansas City hospital is stepping in to fill a medical need in Wichita for patients in need of kidney transplants.

St. Luke's Hospital announced Tuesday plans to open a Kidney transplant satellite clinic in Wichita in August.  The clinic will be located at 1035 N. Emporia near Via Christi.

The satellite clinic will help some of the more than 1000 dialysis patients in Wichita who are being evaluated for transplants.  Currently, patients waiting for a transplant must get pre and post surgery care in Kansas City or Oklahoma City.  That means the burden and expense of travel.

Wichita was left with a void following Via Christi's announcement in May that it would not reopen its transplant program.  The program was stopped in 2012 when Via Christi announced it would investigate the deaths of four transplant patients in less than a month.
