WICHITA, Kan. -

The Kansas Department of Transportation is urging drivers to stay alert due to strong winds, blowing dust and smoke causing limited to zero visibility.

Several roads closed yesterday and accidents have occurred because of low-visibility and high winds. KDOT says driver judgment is the most important factor when driving in bad conditions.

Here is a list of tips they suggest for drivers:

  • Avoid driving into or through dust if possible
  • Have headlights on if you do have to drive
  • Pull off the roadway if needed--completely exit the highway if you can
  • Do not stop in a travel lane
  • Look for safe places to pull off on paved portions of the roadway
  • Make sure your stopped vehicle is a safe distance from other vehicles
  • Turn off all vehicle lights, including emergency flashers while parked
  • Set the emergency brake
  • Stay in the vehicle with your seatbelt buckled
  • Be alert
