A man accused of killing his girlfriend's daughter pleaded not guilty Friday.

Brock Cunningham was arrested last year and charged with first-degree murder and child abuse.

The death of three-year-old Natalie Pickle was ruled as a homicide in 2008, but charges were not filed until four years later when a new county attorney took office.

Cunningham was the boyfriend of Pickle's mother and had been taking care of the girl when she died. He told police that she had fallen off of a bed while he was in another room.

An autopsy was performed, but the doctor said that the three-year-old's injuries could not have been the result of falling off of a bed.

A trial date has not yet been set by the judge. The judge said on Friday that trials must begin within 180 days according to Kansas law. The nature of this case, however, may cause it to take longer.
