WICHITA, Kan. -

A man has been rushed to the hospital after an accident at a Wichita aviation manufacturer.

It happened at Spirit Aerosystems in southeast Wichita around 9:15 p.m. Thursday.

Dispatchers said a 53-year-old man was crushed between two pieces of machinery. He was taken to the hospital with critical injuries to his chest.

In a statement released to Eyewitness News, the company said, "we did unfortunately experience an injury on the shop floor at Spirit tonight.

"Emergency services responded to a report of an employee caught between some machinery. The employee sustained injuries and was transported to a local hospital."

Spirit said it is investigating what caused the accident.

According to Department of Labor information, there have been seven documented cases of workplace accidents at Spirit in the past five years.  Two of those, in 2011 and 2012, were fatal.
