SEATTLE, Wash. -

A man with ties to Salina, Kan. was shot and killed by Washington State troopers Monday night.

KIRO-TV (http://bit.ly/1l67iht) reports the incident started when Jonathan Whitehead stopped his truck on a Seattle bridge, set the truck on fire and spray-painted a large green circle on the interstate.

Witnesses say Whitehead waived a book in the air and confronted to two state troopers with a knife. Troopers shot Whitehead multiple times. He was taken to a hospital where he died.

According to Whitehead's Facebook page, he lives in Salina, but neighbors in Seattle say he lived with his brother who is a "respected" police officer.

Whitehead's family says they don't know what led to his outburst.

Ryan O'Hara told our news partners at the Salina Journal the incident was out of character for his brother.

"It's an absolute shock to all of us," he said.
