MCPHERSON, Kan. -

Kansans have Wichita State, Kansas and Kansas State, but some in McPherson are also rooting for a Texas team, Stephen F. Austin.

McPherson native Brad Underwood is the head coach of Lumberjacks and has coached his team to its first NCAA tournament win in school history,  defeating VCU 77-75 in overtime.  It is his first year as the head coach of Stephen F. Austin.  The team currently has the second longest winning streak, behind Wichita State.

“He’s kind of like his dad, he was an achiever,” family friend Jim Laduke said. “I’m not surprised that Brad Underwood is doing as great as he’s doing.

Underwood was also a player and assistant coach Kansas State. He followed Frank Marin to South Carolina State last year. His first head coaching job was 1988 at Dodge City Community College.

He is the only Kansan coaching, assistant coach Stephen Gentry is from Fort Scott, Kan. and video coordinator Patrick Shulte is also from Seneca, Kan.
