HUTCHINSON, KAN. -

For the first time in decades the Buhler school district has opened a brand new elementary school.

Plum Creek Elementary is actually located in northeast Hutchinson, but will serve Buhler district students in kindergarten through 5th grade.

Wednesday, they attended classes for the first time.

Mandy Holmes has two students at Plum Creek.

She told us, "They were super excited..we told them and we kept driving by and showing them the new building and they were ecstatic..they couldn't wait. It was really exciting..everything is brand new. it was really exciting to know that they are going to get the best."

Ground was broken on Plum Creek just 15 months ago.

There is still some work to be finished, but the most important parts were added Wednesday.

Principal Randy Doerksen says, "The building is a building and the building is beautiful but it doesn't become a beautiful school until there's children. Last night we had our meet-the-teacher night and ribbon cutting. Last night this beautiful building became a beautiful school."

A school that will host children who had attended Prosperity, Union valley, Obee schools...and many from the Hutchinson district.

One thing still to be completed is the gym, which should be done later this month.
