A Harvey County child was taken to the hospital after a self-inflicted shooting Friday morning.
It happened around 10:40 a.m. in the 900 block of Cherry Hills Drive. Deputy Chief Eric Murphy says police were called to Newton Medical Center after a 2-year-old boy arrived with a gunshot wound to the hand.
The child was taken to the hospital by grandparents who were watching the boy. Police say the couple had just picked up the 2-year-old and the grandfather put the gun on the table to bring the boy's luggage inside, telling the grandmother to watch the boy. Police say the grandmother's phone rang, and when she left the room the child shot himself.
Murphy says the grandfather does have a permit to carry a gun, but the holster was in the vehicle at the time of the accident.
The child has minor injuries and is expected to be OK. The Harvey County Attorney will determine what charges will be filed, if any, against the grandparents. The incident is still under investigation.
The bullet went through the door of the house and into a house across the street. No one in the second house was hurt.
Murphy stressed the importance of having some sort of safe or lock system in place for firearms around the home.
