Update: A fund has been set up to help a woman who lost her husband, home and pets in a fire earlier this month.
Pat Adams' husband, Charlie, died in a house fire on S. Volutsia on November 15. Friends tell us she has found a new home and has been in contact with the American Red Cross for assistance, but they're asking for the public's help as well.
Donations can be made to the "Charlie Adams Memorial Fund" at any Capitol Federal Credit Union. Checks can be made out to "Charlie Adams Memorial Fund" and mailed to Capitol Federal Credit Union, 8040 E. Douglas, Wichita, KS 67206.
A 95-year-old man has died after a house fire early Friday morning.
The fire started around 5 a.m. in the 800 block of S. Volutsia.
"Once I got up I could hear sirens already coming, and flames were already roaring by then and as you can see it looks like the house was melting," said one neighbor whose home is right next door.
The Battalion Chief tells Eyewitness News the flames were burning in the front of the house when fire crews arrived on scene. Crews found Charles Adams unconscious in the back. When firefighters were able to pull him out, they say he wasn't breathing and sent him to the hospital in critical condition. He later died.
Wichita Fire Captain Stuart Bevis said Adams' death is the sixth fire fatality of 2013.
Neighbors who spoke with Eyewitness News said they didn't know the man's name, but looked forward to walking by his home where he would wave and talk to them. He lived in the home with his wife, who was at work at the time of the fire.
"They’re good, good, good folks," said Tomes. "They both worked really hard to get to where they are now. It’s very sad to see what happened here."
Fire investigators are still working on what caused the fatal fire.
