Update: The suspect in a deadly officer involved shooting in Rural Barton County has been identified.
The Barton County Sheriff's office says that 71 year old George Carson died when he confronted officers. Gunfire was exchanged between Carson and the officers. Carson was hurt during the exchange. He was taken to a Hoisington hospital where he later died. One county patrol car was damaged by gunfire. Authorities were originally called to the scene in reference to a domestic battery case where shots had been fired. The Kansas Highway Patrol also assisted in the incident. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is now handling the case.
One person was killed in an officer-involved shooting in Barton County along NW 190th Street Saturday. Officers remained in the area until around 2:00 Sunday afternoon.
The Kansas Highway Patrol says around 7:00 p.m., troopers responded to a report of an armed suspect that had injured a family member and threatened others. Neighbors told Eyewitness News it was his son, but law enforcement wouldn't confirm or deny that information.
When troopers arrived, KHP reported shots were fired and the suspect was shot.
The suspect was taken to the hospital, but later died.
The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is currently investigating the shooting.
At this time officials could not specify whether the suspect ever fired at the officer.
The trooper involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues, which is protocol for these situations.
Rufus Haas said he knew the man for 20 years and he would often stop by his house to visit. Haas lives right down the road from the man.
"He was a very nice person. He visited me about once a week, he'd come down and see me since I'm by myself," Haas said. "Very shocked because it's the last thing that I'd ever expect from them."
Haas said he spoke with the man's wife Sunday morning and she told him the man shot at an officer's vehicle Saturday night after chasing her and her son outside. He said the man's wife told him the man shot their son in the hand.
Eyewitness News has tried calling KBI, the Barton County Sheriff's Office and KHP to confirm the details. KBI is handling the investigation and said it will not release any more details until a news conference Tuesday.
